Well, Jody Foster is really very good in this one (as she usually is) but I liked the series with Samantha Eggar and Yul Brynner better - maybe because it was more fun and this here is much more serious. But - let's leave no doubt - this one's a brilliant movie with opulent colors and props and a very convincing storyline and really good actors. A lady, played by Bai Ling, is accused of having betrayed the emperor by sleeping with a monk who has been her true love. She's led into the courtroom in chains and later on beaten with sticks as she accuses the judges of having a filthy mind (justly so - the accusation, that is). She and her lover are later beheaded. For her execution she's tied with her back to a bamboo cross, her hands are tied in front. Sorry for the subtitles ... there's just no way to get rid of them but, although not understanding a single word, Bai's dialogue is truly excellent, the agony, the passion ... probably a good idea, to not dub this part of the movie. A movie to recommend, no doubt!
